Canal trip 1999

We started off from Stratford this year, up the Stratford canal to Kingswood Junction, then turned right onto the Grand Union, and right again towards Warwick. At Braunston Turn, we turned left up the North Oxford Canal, then after a brief sidetrip up the Ashby canal for the day, on up the Coventry Canal to Fradley Junction, where we turned left onto the Trent and Mersey as far as Great Heywood, where we turned down the Staffs and Worcester canal to Aldersley Junction. From here we turned left up the Wolverhampton flight of locks onto the Birmingham Main Line and so to the Dudley No 1 canal and The Black Country Museum for the day. We then travelled through the heart of Birmingham, and out again on the North Stratford canal and back to Stratford upon Avon. The whole journey was 207 miles long, with 183 locks and took two weeks. You can follow our route on the map below.
