Leigh has been working with wood for many years, Jo was tempted to the lathe one Christmas and we have not looked back since. We live near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, in south west Wales. There is more about our previous life on Jo's original website.
Leigh Rihan RPT. Leigh has recently been accepted onto the Register of Professional Turners, which is maintained by the Worshipful Company of Turners. According to the RPT – "This Register is composed of turners who offer a professional service to the public, and whose work, prior to admission, has been approved by competent assessors as being of good quality".
We both enjoy experimenting with new ideas. We take pride in our workmanship and believe that it is our joy in our craft that makes our work stand out. The inspirations for our work are the colours and patterns in the wood itself as well as the beautiful landscape from which it comes. Although we prefer to concentrate on one-off items - bowls, platters and thin walled forms, we do make a full range of turned products, including light pulls, fruit, toadstools and candlesticks. Together with the eternal quest for the perfect line, we are developing decorative techniques, including carving, burning and the use of natural stains
Most of the wood that we use comes from local trees, though we never turn down gifts of timber from other areas! In all cases we try to ensure that the trees come from sustainably managed sources. We are always looking for wood – fruit woods, holly, ash, elm, beech, oak, yew – almost anything really. If you live near us and have cut down a tree and are wondering how to get rid of it, ask us!
We are also creating a new woodland, for future turners, in our field. Unwanted tree seed or seedlings will be gratefully accepted for rehoming!
We have a traditional pole lathe as well as a small electric one which we are always happy to show off. Look out for us in local castles and at some craft events
If you like what you see, but can not see exactly what you want then we can probably make it for you, just ask.
