Tutorial 1 - - The software

I have tried 4 of the most popular map building programs out there and I`ve found that the best of the lot is QERadiant. If you want to follow these tutorials fully and you want technical help all the way, then I sugest that you use QERadiant.

So, on with the tutorial.

First a note about the file downloads, I strongly suggest that you place all files in the reccomended default directories..... if you do this, your job of configuring the software will be 100 times easier.

PART1 - File Downloads.

Step1- download QERadiant. When you run this self-extracting archive, it will want to install to "C:\Program files\QERadiant". If you decide to put it somewhere else, you`re asking for problems.

Step2- download the QERadiant-Update to update the downloaded version to the newest one. You need the update if you want to make half-life maps. Once the update is downloaded and unzipped, you will see that it`s just an .exe file to replace the original .exe, which you will find in "C:\Program files\QERadiant"
.......replace it now.

Step3- download the Half-life plug-in for QERadiant. This is where it starts to get a little messy, you need to place all these files in the QERadiant directory, but later you`ll have to move one of them.

PART2 - Running for the first time

Ok, now you`re ready to run QERadiant for the first time, a couple of things to set up and then it`ll just go straight in every time after. You will get a popup window

you should set these options as shown

When it asks if you want to load the default project, say NO.
then click on file.. and then on load project.. and load in the halflife.qe4 file that you put there earlier.

Lastly you need to move the Halflife.dll file into the plugin directory and click plugins... refresh.

now you should find that each time you run QERadiant it takes about 2 minutes to set everything up. On my machine it locks up badly, but if I wait 2 1/2 minutes, everything is tickety-boo.

ok... I`m going to use some phrases to identify certain aspects of QER and as I use any in the tutorials I`ll add them here.

Next tutorial ....... the first map ....
