This play
is notably set in a non-time.
There are
no specific costumes or props required except the following
1
You
will need an old black (or dark) curtain. During the final stage of the first
section (The Garden) this curtain needs to be drawn between God and Adam (and
Eve). This represents the curtain in the temple separating God from Man. It is endeavouring
to demonstrate the separation form God that man has to endure up to the time
that Jesus dies.
2
Eight
net sacks need to be made. These need to fit over Adam and Eve loosely enough
to allow movement but as they get added will restrict both vision and movement.
They represent the impact of bad (sinful) situations we encounter that restrict
our ability to operate successfully. Similar to Pilgrim’s burden in Pilgrim’s
Progress. John Bunyan.
3
The
Cross. During the crucifixion scene greatest effect can be achieved by
utilising two large tree branches (about 6ft and 4ft, about 5 to 6 inches in
diameter). During the monologue these can be tied together using a long length
of rope to form a traditional cross shape. The cross needs to be completed
towards the last paragraph, the centurion then carries the cross to a place
where it is visible to Adam and Eve.
We are
trying to convey the restricting power of self achievement and the releasing
power of the cross. This is the core message of the new testament ‘Love the
Lord Your God… and Love your neighbour…’. 1 John 5, ‘if we do not love our
brother then we cannot be loving God…’ and so on.
