the limitations of desire

"Enh," Nii said lazily. "You come here to bother me, but frankly I find you small-time. Small-scale. Non-apocalyptic."

"Blame my inclinations," Greed said. He was wandering around the laboratory, appraising pieces of glasswork, poking at the computers. "I'm just asking you for something reasonable."

"Oh."

"Something manageable."

"Oh." Nii sucked on his cigarette, then let it dangle lewdly from the corner of his mouth. "Yes well then, you should have gone to someone else, shouldn't you? I don't believe in being petty."

"Word has it you don't believe in anything," Greed snapped.

"Word's got it right." Nii smirked. "Or should I say that I believe in nothing?"

Greed snorted. "You're no use to me, then."

"Or you to me. You want to keep far too much as it is."

"Well, of course I do." Greed folded his arms. "It's mine. Or it will be."

"There you go," said Nii. "I just can't care about my toys that way."
