The Strange Adventure of the Company of Wolves
I have from time to time spoken of those cases which took us outside the British Isles, or which dealt with matters of the past. This is the first time, however, that I have mentioned Gevaudan. It was in those windswept woods, and in the ancient chateau which crowned the area, that my friend Sherlock Holmes first touched the horrific secret of the Beast of Gevaudan, and plumbed a matter which has mystified the world for generations.
