Ban leaned on the side of the jeep, yearning to open it up and get a look at the engine. "So - where are you going, again?"

"West," the man with the monocle said, with a smile that was about as friendly and sincere as Doctor Jackal's. "Collecting some, ah, paperwork."

"Regular line of business?" Ban enquired curiously.

"More of a one-off," the man said deprecatingly. "A person of our acquaintance needed it done, and, well . . ."

Ban nodded understandingly. "Hope you got the money in advance."

The other kept smiling. "Not really. I'm still paying off old debts."
