a handful of dust

Hueco Mundo was all dust and sand and stone, Chad reflected, Nothing grew here; no water flowed; no rivers ran down to the sea. There was no true life, no growth, no children. The Hollows ate each other and then were eaten by the more powerful. It was all like the spirals of sand in an hourglass, pouring away into emptiness.

The shinigami could have children. They went forward through life and death, knowing that they would be born again. But the Hollows clung to their sterility and their hunger and death; they ate the dust. They had no water.
