Turning in Shallow Water and High Wind

This page is being developed to collect comments and data concerning the problems associated with turning large vessels in shallow water and high winds.

A discussion document is being prepared that tries to draw together the issues involved in manoevring larger vessels, especially longer vessels with high side windage.
It is hoped to publish this shortly.
It will then be made available from this site.

The SIGTTO site will also have some further information soon.

Meanwhile the aim is to start collecting data so as to to get  better informed understanding of the issues that need to be addressed formally.

The following format should be used to collect data:

Notes:

a. Position:    Please be as accurate as possible; for example -  if GPS is being used  then please record 3 decimal places if possible .
b. Wind:    Please record true wind direction and speed NOT relative
c. Current:    Please make best estimate of current
d. Under Keel Clearance:    Please record as accurately as possible
e. Block Coefficient:    Please ensure this is correct for draught
