Thursday 13th September 2007
THE SOLENT BRANCH OF THE NAUTICAL INSTITUTE.
EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
Thursday, September 13th. 2007, at the Southampton Master Mariners’
Club
The meeting convened at 1930 with 24 members in attendance.
Apologies were received from Q.Cox,.I.Walters, PKC Harris, I.Lawler,
I.Russell, I.Odd, P.Grant, M.Plumridge, J.Habberley, J.Styles, J.Milner,C.Lowe,
A.McDowall, J.Funnell and L.Morris.
Vice Chairman (Sea) Matt Winter extended a special welcome to Philip
Wake, Chief Executive of The Nautical Institute. He thanked the SMMC for
affording the use of the Clubroom and “Liz” for running the bar and assuaging
our thirst.
Matt invited the meeting to comment on the future (or otherwise) of
the Solent Branch and, in response, Rob Hoole welcomed the initiative
to “revitalise” the branch but hoped that it would not “eventually wither
on the vine”.
The Branch Secretary, Reg Kelso, was asked to initiate the election
procedure and he reported to the meeting that he had three nominations
for office – one for each of the vacant positions viz Branch Chairman, Vice
Chairman and Branch Secretary.
The nomination for Branch Chairman was Richard Eastham, proposed by
George Lang and seconded by George Angas, the nomination for Vice Chairman
was Colin Thomas, proposed by Barry Peck and seconded by Doug Gates and
the nomination for Branch Secretary was Peter Aylott, proposed by
Reg Kelso and seconded by David Gibbons.
The meeting was invited to endorse each appointment individually and
voting was unanimous.
Reg Kelso explained that there would not be an appointment as “Meetings
Secretary” as experience had indicated that this was unnecessary. If it
was deemed expedient to reintroduce this post a further decision would
be made at the 2008 AGM.
The Branch Committee currently comprises:
Q.Cox I.Walters* G.Lang P.Grant* I.Odd*
together with “ex officio” Committee members N.Hardy*
M.Barnett F.Greenfield A.Peacock N.Beer
J.Lang and I.Lawler*
* denotes “seafaring”
Nominations for membership of the Committee were invited from the
“floor” of the meeting and the following names were forthcoming:
Rod Hoole George Angas Paul
Docherty and Claire Hogan
The nominations were unanimously endorsed by the meeting
Richard Eastham then took the Chair of the meeting and initiated a
general discussion on the modus operandi of the Branch in the year(s) ahead.
Reg Kelso had tabled a paper explaining the various categories of meetings
and events – Branch meetings, Speaker meetings, Social events and Committee
meetings – and hoped that Branch meetings would be reinstated to encourage
the greater involvement of the membership. The meeting endorsed this viewpoint
and the Chairman then announced a short interval after which there would
be brief discussion about the venues, timings and format of future meetings,
together with “Any other Business”.
