"What's going on? Getting transport's message across"
Paul Clifton, Transport Correspondent, BBC South & David Jinks , Editor, "Transport & Logistics FOCUS"

Good communication is easy to recognise but difficult to produce and, despite the recent tarnishing caused by 'spin',
it remains one of business's gold standards.
Paul Clifton explains transport issues to the general public via the medium of television and
David Jinks is the editor of our journal 'Focus' which explains news from the transport and logistics profession to its practitioners.
Two very different types of communication from two expert and entertaining speakers.
Come along and hear their messages.

"Success in managing the  MSC Napoli incident"

Robin Middleton, SOSREP, UK

SOSREP is now an important acronym to remember for anybody involved in sea transportation.
Robin Middleton is the first holder of that title and since 1999 has dealt with 665 incidents in UK waters.
On the 18th of January he faced the challenge of co-ordinating the UK’s response to the container ship MSC NAPOLI which suffered damage during heavy weather whilst in the English Channel.
The incident was played out very publicly and the happy outcome is the continuing successful salvage of the ship (which is now nearly complete)
and most of its cargo with encouragingly limited environmental damage..

Annual Charity Quiz

Peter Impett, our quizmaster, collects his ideas over the year to form 100 ingenious questions that cover a number of topics but maintain a transport theme. Teams of four (many of which are only formed on arrival) compete and then enjoy a buffet, a raffle and a handy bar. The entry fee is only £5 a head collected on the night and an appropriate charity benefits from the evening’s surplus. It’s bound to be a great networking opportunity and you might take the Ray Swann Quiz Cup and/or a few prizes home as well!!

Please book individually, or as teams of four via Corby in order to establish numbers attending.
There will be a charge of £5 per person collected on the night. This represents the entry fee to the quiz and a buffet.
The surplus proceeds from this event are always donated to a relevant charity
.

"Wher's my suitcase? The economics and the logistics of airline baggage handling"

Richard Hunt, Iinternational President, CILT

Many a traveller's tale surrounds a story of lost or mislaid luggage, but the reality is that a very complex logistics operation ensures that such tales remain a newsworthy experience.
These complex logistics are expensive, of course, with their cost adding to the final price of the ticket.
This means that the new low cost airlines must make their luggage charges much more visible in order for them to stay profitable.
Our presenter takes us on an expert guided tour of this generally overlooked aspect of today's air transport.

"The challenges of providing attractive bus services across Hampshire and Dorset"
Richard Soper, Managing Director, First in Hampshire and Dorset

A bus company operating across south Hampshire and Dorset is one of contrasts.
City congestion in Southampton and Portsmouthto rural operations in Dorset,
peak dominated school flows to the new challenge of accommodating those pensioners heading for their free travel elsewhere in the country.
Richard Soper has a unique grasp of how to tackle these trends, having introduced many innovations to the network in recent years.
This will be a fascinating talk for all who claim that getting people out of their cars is quite a simple matter.

"Challenges for Future Investment in the UK's National Gas Transmission Network"
Russell Cooper, Network Investment Manager, National  Grid, National Gas Transmission Network

For 30 years the UK has benefited from the gas supplies located in our own offshore fields, but  the next decade sees us moving to a position where 80% of our gas consumption will depend on an imported supply.
At the same time the demand continues for prices to be the result of an open, flexible and responsive market that combines security of supply with value to gas customers.
How will these logistics and gas supply chain challenges be met?
