"Marchwood Energy Recovery (ERF) Site Visit"

The disposal of waste represents the ultimate reverse supply chain.
Landfill has become an expensive and unsatisfactory destination for residues that remain despite a rising environmental awareness that has increased the amount that can be recycled.
The best current alternative is energy recovery through waste incineration.
A high degree of professionalism is needed, however, to minimise environmental impact
Our visit shows us how this is done in Hampshire.

venue: Integra South West ERF, Oceanic Way, Marchwood Industrial Park, Southampton. SO40 4BD
time: 1345 for 1400

"Shipping Freight by water; environmentally friendly, but can it survive the credit crunch?"

Dr Mervyn Rowlinson, Shipping & Intermodal Logistics Research, Southampton, Ciopenhagen & Hamburg

Coastal shipping and inland water transport offers an environmentally beneficial alternative to road haulage. But it can also appear to be a costly method in a recession. Are these cost comparisons fair, or even true? Our speaker, an acknowledged authority on this subject, explains why we might not be hearing the full story..

"Returning to Normality; the logistics response to the aftermath of natural disasters"
Michael Whiting FCILT:  Chaitrman Devon & Cornwall Group CILT (UK)

Earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters make world headlines but the media move on and the recovery from events then goes largely unreported. Michael Whiting’s experience of recent disasters such as the 2004 tsunami, the cyclone devastation of coastal Myanmar and the Haiti earthquake helps us to understand what British aid and the CILT’s expertise has done to facilitate some return to normality. This is an opportunity to learn just what logistical recovery means in very hard practice.

Annual Charity Quiz

Peter Impett, our quizmaster, collects his ideas over the year to form 100 ingenious questions that cover a number of topics but maintain a transport theme. Teams of four (many of which are only formed on arrival) compete and then enjoy a buffet, a raffle and a handy bar. The entry fee is only £5 a head collected on the night and an appropriate charity benefits from the evening’s surplus. It’s bound to be a great networking opportunity and you might take the Ray Swann Quiz Cup and/or a few prizes home as well!!

Please book individually, or as teams of four via Corby in order to establish numbers attending.
There will be a charge of £5 per person collected on the night. This represents the entry fee to the quiz and a buffet.
The surplus proceeds from this event are always donated to a relevant charity

"The Hythe-Southampton Ferry: operating an unusual yet vital transport link"
Richard Lay, White Horse Ferries Ltd

The ferry crossing the busy River Test from Hythe Pier is an essential element in the transport network of the city of Southampton. Richard Lay describes the ordinary problems of that link and also recounts the drastic readjustments that followed the destruction of the pier by a dredger in November 2003. With service restored just 36 hours after the collision, this was an outstanding example of a disaster recovery plan that makes essential listening for anyone who operates public transport networks.
