Water Monitor in use
The Boughton Barracuda features powerful water/ foam cannons which spray enormous volumes of water in a short time. They have to be used sparingly although the foam concentrate is highly efficient at extinguishing fires. The wind direction is utilised to help direct the jet. A "fog" of water vapour drifts downwind for hundreds of meters.

The Barracuda's Water Monitors
Down the barrel of the Water Monitor

  • The powerful water cannons used to extinguish fires are called Monitors.
  • The main monitor can empty the Barracuda's 10,000 litre tank in three minutes. It has a range of 100 metres or more, depending on the wind direction. It can also spray a blanket of foam if required.
  • The large monitor on top is servo assisted but can be directed manually should the system fail.
  • It takes seven fire engines to keep a Barracuda supplied with water when in full flow.
  • Foam concentrate is stored in a tank accessible from the top.
