MICROELECTRONICS
(2nd. Edition) by Jacob Millman and Arvin Grabel1,001 pages. Softback. December 1989. This hefty reference book offers an intensive study aid for electrical, electronic and computer science students. The first five chapters cover the physics and practicalities of solid state devices, starting with the diode, then the BJT and FET. An in-depth analysis of transistor and i.c. fabrication is provided, then moving on to Boolean algebra and a discussion on logic gate characteristics. Combinational and sequential logic is covered in some depth, then VLSI, RAM, CCDs and I²L is highlighted, followed by a very brief overview of the MPU. Analogue circuitry is comprehensively covered, looking at design and biasing of single BJT and FET stages, frequency response, feedback and stability. Op-amp characteristics are explored, followed by signal processing - oscillators, the 555 and A-D/ D-A also receive a comprehensive treatment. The book finishes with large-signal electronics - rectification, power supplies and amplifier classes, followed by thermal considerations. Roughly 120 pages of set problems follow on from a small number of Appendices (including a useful one on semiconductor device specifications). MICROELECTRONICS provides an extremely intensive physical and mathematical analysis of circuitry and their characteristics. It is very maths-intensive and a good knowledge of algebra is needed to get the most out of the book. The book explores even the simplest circuit elements in very great depth, often providing the answers to all those questions we were itching to ask or maybe took for granted. In my view, it forms an excellent counterpart for the Art of Electronics, providing all the physical material needed to gain a solid understanding of microelectronics theory. It isn't for the faint-hearted or casual reader, though, as it can be tough reading at times for the mathematically less-confident. Perfect for the more advanced student or engineer and a worthy book for the more serious enthusiast too. Click here to order MICROELECTRONICS from amazon.co.uk [ Back to Book Choices page ] |
